Read School is proud to be a licensed Duke of Edinburgh centre and students from Year 9 upwards are encouraged to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh award. The D of E Award is a life enhancing experience; a time to develop and discover new talents and interests, while evolving friendships, leadership skills and confidence.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards give students at Read the opportunity to achieve success at all levels; bronze, silver and gold. Bronze and Silver Awards comprise four sections and the Gold Award, five. These sections include: helping in the community or environment, personal fitness and planning and training for an expedition. The Gold award requires extending personal development to working with a team on a residential activity.

For Sixth Formers, DofE is said to be the single most desirable factor influencing their UCAS application, outside of their predicted grades. In the Read School Sixth Form, many students are working towards the prestigious gold award. The Award also shows no sign of losing its place in the minds of top employers as one of the most sought after qualifications and a highly valuable achievement in any prospective employee.
