Activities
It is good for children to be busy. The most successful young people are those with plenty to do. In addition to the daily activity programme incorporating drama, sports coaching, art, dance, orchestra and choir practices and the weekend programme for boarders including cinema, ice-skating, swimming, museums and walks, we run an extensive programme of residential visits in the UK and overseas.
In the last five years, school groups have visited Canada (skiing with the CCF), Spain and France (language study), France (skiing, snowboarding), Rome and Pompeii (language study), London (art galleries), Newcastle-upon-Tyne (cultural visit) and New York (cultural visit). A party of students and staff will visit Morocco in March 2010.
The school has undertaken two expeditions with World Challenge Expeditions, in 2007 to Malawi and in 2009 to Thailand/Laos. A further expedition has just been launched and will take place in Namibia in 2011, this time with Schools Worldwide. These expeditions take place over three to four weeks and involve trekking as well as a community project. Both the Malawi and Thailand expeditions took part in school projects, building and repairing schools for the local communities. These have provided a wealth of experience for the pupils taking part, from fund-raising to pay the costs of taking part, to doing worthwhile work for the benefit of others.
Iin addition to all this, the Junior School has its own residential programme, visiting residential centres for outdoor activities, such as East Barnby on the North Yorks moors, the Hollowford Centre, near the Peak District, and Winmarleigh Hall in Lancashire.
