The Lower Junior School consists of three small classes (of usually less than 10 children), comprised of an Early Years Unit (ages 3-5) and two Key Stage 1 classes, Years 1 and 2 (ages 6-7). A child centred approach through early play underpins the work of the Early Years Unit, building to a broad and balanced curriculum at Key Stage 1.

  • Government frameworks for learning provide a guideline but teaching is not dictated by these or used in isolation.
  • Basic skills in number, writing, spelling and reading form the core of morning work.
  • Afternoon topic work consists of history, geography, science and religious studies; these subjects reinforce the basic skills.
  • Children are introduced to language learning from entry in to the school, with French being taught at a basic level.
  • Small intimate learning groups promote self esteem and enquiring minds within a vibrant, exciting learning environment based on the ideal of an extended family community.

Sharing the facilities of the main school site

The children of the Lower Junior School often visit the main school site, joining the pupils of the Upper Junior School for some music and drama productions, and some assemblies of celebration and worship. The children experience the Senior School facilities for some of their P.E and games lessons in addition to the teaching instruction being provided by some of the Upper Junior School staff. In this way the pupils see themselves as part of the bigger school and the transition from one key stage to another is made more confidently and smoothly.

Why choose Read Junior School?

We foster a strong sense of family community and spirit where the priority is to nurture the individual child to fulfil their full potential. Small learning groups help to promote self-esteem and expression and develop the enquiring mind. Individuals are encouraged to succeed and we share and celebrate these achievements but we also encourage a sense of teamwork.

Together Everybody Achieves More!

We offer a wide-ranging and diverse activities programme in addition to those experienced and taught in the classroom so children become well-rounded individuals.
