On Wednesday 22 March the first team took part in the Hull Collegiate 8-a-side tournament. In wet and windy conditions we got off to a cracking start beating Ampleforth College 3 – 0 (scorers Toby Evans, Jackson Gray and Yves Kombe). Game 2 saw a closer encounter with Scarborough College, resulting in a 0 – 0 draw. Game 3 was another dominant performance against Ackworth, after the 12 minute game we won 1 – 0, Toby Evans scoring. The winning streak continued in Game 4, Toby Evans and Yves Kombe giving us a 2 – 0 win against the Hull Collegiate B team. We lost Game 5 against a strong Lincoln Minster team 1 – 0, although we did have chances late in the match.
In the last group match we switched back on and beat Leeds Grammar School B team 2 – 0 (scorers Jackson Gray and Yves Kombe). A brilliant set of results put us in second place in our group. We were then through to the positional matches where we played the second place from group 1, Bootham, to decide the overall positions. A very controversial penalty gave Bootham a chance to take the lead, which they did. We played some good attacking football, had a couple chances but couldn’t find the back of the net. Bootham scored from a breakaway to make the final result 2 – 0. A brilliant afternoon of football from the boys, our final position was fourth out of 13 teams which is an exceptional achievement, given our relative size compared to some of these larger schools.
