Read School in Drax is celebrating the GCSE results day after returning a 100 per cent pass for all students.
Described as a “shambolic exam grades system”, the school’s staff were thrilled to share their students’ success. A 99 per cent pass rate was achieved with a grade 4 or above, while 34 per cent of students were awarded grades
7to9,and66percentreceived6to9.
Head teacher Ruth Ainley said: “Our resilient GCSE
pupils have triumphed yet again today with a truly fantastic set of results and each one deserves this wonderful recognition of their success.
“2020 has been a tough year all round but our young people have shown they can keep their heads and apply themselves despite this changing world.
“Their commitment to remote learning, which our teachers rolled out so efficiently from the start of the pandemic, and which parents have fed back they are delighted with, meant the long-term impact on pupils’ studies was minimal. Their well-deserved high grades are testament to this.
“Alongside academic achievements, we are taking time
today to celebrate the diverse range of other skills our pupils have acquired at Read including the Combined Cadet Force, Duke of Edinburgh and Leiths Food & Wine School.
“We have limited Sixth Form places available from September.”
Deputy Head, Mark Voisey, said: “At Read today, we’ve all had tears of joy, and elbow-bumps rather than hugs, as our eager pupils tore open their envelopes and gasped in relief.
“We worked closely with each pupil during lockdown, creating bespoke learning packages, and got pupils back to school as soon as it was safe to do so. Our spacious school buildings but small class sizes, meant we were able to get pupils back in far earlier than other schools, and we are fully prepared should autumn bring further challenges.
“It was wonderful to see our pupils reap these rewards they so deserve from their years of hard work, and we look forward to some of them continuing on in to Sixth Form.”

“We’re delighted our pupils will move on far and wide to some of the best universities.
“While 2020 has been a difficult year in so many ways, with education interrupted by the pandemic, Read pupils have exhibited maturity, resilience and cool-headedness, applying themselves to their studies to achieve today’s exceptional and well-deserved results.
“Our comprehensive, high-quality remote learning offering, which we organised and delivered at short notice, minimised disruption and allowed pupils to continue to flourish. Parents have been delighted.”
