Read School, Drax celebrate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe.

Read School CCF celebrated VE Day with a parade on the front field, followed by typical British summer treats. The cadets learned about the drumhead altar used by British troops in the field. They listened to Padre Albert Jackson deliver a heartfelt and powerful sermon, explaining why VE Day was such a monumental occasion 80 years ago and why its significance continues to be honoured today. Thank you to all the cadets and parents who joined us for the event.

A particular word of thanks must go to Dr Gordon, Lt Filed, CSgt Tehan for helping to organise the event. Thanks also to our remarkable students Cdt Cpl Lucy Thomson, who led the parade, Cdt LCpl Emily Medlock for the scripture reading and Cdt Gracie Dukes for a wonderful rendition of 'God save the King' on her flute.

Head teacher, Ruth Ainley commented, “our CCF Army and RAF cadets and their officers made us proud with a flawless parade and service. Memories of World War II are particularly poignant at Read, as the School lost thirty-eight Draxonians who gave their lives in the conflict. Their names and stories - along with those of the old boys of the School who died in the First World War and Northern Ireland - are remembered each year at our annual Remembrance Service. It was therefore fitting that we were joined yesterday by former Governor and Draxonian, Mr David Ward, who himself was a young boarder at Drax on VE Day in 1945 and who shared his memories of school life during wartime.

Mrs. Ainley added, “I am very proud that these important historical events are still commemorated in school as they are an intrinsic part of our distinguished 358 year history. The event also brought back poignant memories of 8th May 2020 when the School commemorated the 75th anniversary of VE Day online due to lock down with our school community sending in photos and videos of uniformed cadets and tea parties! Well done to our fantastic CCF contingent for a memorable VE Day 80 and to the hard-working Read Parents and Friends Association for the sumptuous VE Day post-parade tea party. Lest we forget!”
