Read School celebrates record GCSE results.

As a non-selective school, whose ethos is to offer every pupil an opportunity to access a level of education that is suited to their needs, Read School is delighted to report GCSE results of 90% A* - C grades, some +20% higher than nationally published grades and against the backdrop of a widening North-South divide, far ahead of published results for Yorkshire and the Humber.

Almost half of the grades obtained were grade 6 and above and although these grades are across the board, there were some really exciting subject success stories. Languages had a 100% pass rate and 54% grade 8/9 (A/A*) across French, Spanish, German, Latin and Chinese.

Our creative pupils also put in an exceptional performance with a 100% pass rate in Music, Food Preparation & Nutrition and Drama.

In Further Maths, the cohort also scored 100% passes, with over 50% of the cohort scoring top grades 8 or 9 with similar top grades notched up in Computer Science and Creative iMedia.

There were some spectacular individual student performances too, with Josie Kemeny achieving 3x9, 6x8,  Jonathan Alright gaining 3x9, 1x8, 3x7 and 2x6 and George Bullers gaining 1x9, 2x8, 3x7,2x6 and 1x7.5.

Read School is very proud of its reputation for curating bespoke educational pathways for pupils with additional learning needs and, alongside GCSE exams, several pupils took a variety of different qualifications, including entry-level and functional skills certificates  to build confidence and ensure a rounded portfolio of results for all pupils.

Grades do not tell the whole story, however, and across Year 11, students have reached the highest classification of Master Cadet in CCF and attended Army and RAF summer camps as well as x number of pupils gaining their Silver DofE this year. Alongside their studies, Year 11 students have had the opportunity to participate in five overseas trips, including an October sports tour to Marbella, throw themselves into this year’s dramatic production of Chicago and perform at musical concerts and recitals held throughout the year.

Head of Sixth Form, Annette Oliver said,

"Our Year 11 cohort were in Year 6 and Year 7 during the Covid lockdowns and struggled with a disrupted transition to Senior School.  We are immensely proud of their accomplishments and particularly delighted that so many of this cohort are staying with us into the Read Sixth Form, to study either A-levels or BTECs.   We are confident of even more wonderful results from them in the coming years!"

Headmistress, Ruth Ainley, added

"Exams results days are one of the highlights of the year and it was absolutely heartwarming to see the happy faces of pupils and receive so many grateful comments from parents.   Target grades are often ambitious, especially for SEND pupils but we are delighted that most pupils exceed these, leaving the school with a very positive 'value add'.  For some pupils yesterday was the end of their 5-10 year Read School journey and how wonderful to reflect on everything they have accomplished with us, outside the classroom as well as academically.   We wish all of our Year 11 cohort the very best for the next stage of their education and look forward to hearing of their future successes."
