Technology & Digital Literacy

At Read School, technology is seamlessly integrated into everyday learning, empowering our pupils to become confident, creative, and responsible digital citizens. Rather than seeing tech as a replacement for traditional learning, we embed digital tools across every subject while teaching Computer Science and IT as vital disciplines in their own right.

Modern Digital Learning Facilities & 1:1 Devices

We continuously invest in our digital infrastructure to give pupils the tools they need for 21st-century study:

  • 1:1 Device Initiative (Year 6 & Above): From Year 6 upwards, every pupil utilises their own dedicated 1:1 device. This allows seamless access to dynamic learning resources, collaborative group projects, and personalised study tools across all subjects.

  • A Balanced Approach to Screen Time: While 1:1 devices enhance modern research and coursework, we place equal value on traditional learning methods. Reading physical books, developing handwriting, hands-on science experiments, collaborative debate, and active sports remain at the absolute core of daily school life. Tech is used purposefully as a learning catalyst- never just for the sake of screen time.

  • Interactive Classrooms & IT Suites: Teaching spaces feature high-speed Wi-Fi and interactive displays, alongside fully equipped specialist IT suites for coding, digital design, and independent study.

  • Connected Boarding Homes: Our boarding houses provide secure, monitored internet access and study stations, allowing boarders to complete prep and stay connected with family comfortably.

Critical Thinking & Digital Research

Access to information is unlimited, but knowing how to navigate it wisely is an essential life skill. From their early years with us, we teach pupils how to:

  • Evaluate Online Sources: Critically assess the accuracy, bias, and intellectual integrity of online information and open-access reference sites.

  • Identify Misinformation: Recognise how digital platforms can be used to spread bias, misinformation, or harmful narratives.

  • Conduct Research Safely: Use search tools effectively, ethically, and responsibly for academic projects.

E-Safety: Staying Safe in a Connected World

While digital platforms offer extraordinary opportunities for connection, creativity, and collaboration, we recognise the risks that come with an online lifestyle—from social media pressures to digital footprint awareness.

Our comprehensive, age-appropriate E-Safety curriculum helps pupils navigate the digital world securely:

  • Proactive E-Safety Education: Taught through PSHE and Computer Science, we educate pupils on protecting personal data, recognising online risks (such as cyberbullying, grooming, and online harassment), and maintaining a positive digital footprint.

  • Healthy Digital Habits: We encourage a balanced, healthy relationship with technology, helping pupils make smart choices on social media and online gaming platforms.

  • Robust Safeguarding: Clear filtering, monitoring systems, and supportive pastoral guidance ensure that technology remains a powerful, safe force for good in our pupils' lives.
