At Read, extra-curricular activities are more than just a change from academic lessons, they’re a vital part of our pupils’ journey. From lunchtime clubs to after-school activities, weekend sports and adventures, to exciting trips across the country and far beyond, Read offers a rich and varied programme designed to spark curiosity, build confidence and create lasting memories.
Each term, pupils dive into activities that challenge and excite them — whether it's sports, arts, science, or something entirely new. Many find a club they love and stick with it for years, forming friendships and discovering talents they never knew they had. For some, it’s the beginning of a lifelong passion.

Performing Arts (Music & Drama)
Our vibrant Music and Drama activities offer pupils a wealth of opportunities to express themselves, build confidence, and develop their talents throughout the year. From dynamic drama groups and full-scale school productions to choirs and orchestras, there’s something for every aspiring performer.
Pupils who learn a musical instrument or take singing lessons in school are warmly encouraged to join at least one of the many ensembles available to them – whether they’re looking to perform on stage, collaborate with others, or simply enjoy the joy of making music.

Adventurous Pursuits - Read School CCF
Read School’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF) offers pupils a unique blend of challenge, discipline, and adventure — all within a safe and supportive environment. It’s more than just an enrichment activity; it’s a programme that nurtures resilience, teamwork, and leadership, helping to shape the leaders of tomorrow.
Starting in Year 8, pupils can join the CCF and follow a core curriculum that includes fieldcraft, skill at arms and essential skills for personal development such as first aid, leadership and care in the community. As they progress, cadets can choose to continue with the Army section or transition to the RAF in Year 9, tailoring their experience to their interests.
Beyond weekly training, cadets enjoy unforgettable experiences such as adventurous training camps, flying opportunities, and residential trips — all designed to build confidence and character while having fun. It’s an incredible way to stay active, learn new skills, and grow as individuals.
Duke of Edinburgh Programme
Our enrichment programme is also designed to inspire ambition, build character and prepare pupils to lead with confidence. From Year 9 onwards, all students are invited to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, with many progressing from Bronze through to Gold. This nationally recognised scheme encourages pupils to push boundaries and grow through a personalised journey across four key areas: physical activity, skill development, volunteering and expedition.
Leadership opportunities extend far beyond DofE. Pupils can take an active role in shaping school life - whether through school councils, house and pupil leadership roles, or contributing to newsletters and publications. Senior students also have the chance to volunteer in junior schools, strengthening Read’s close-knit community while developing valuable mentoring and communication skills.
To support future aspirations, we offer a comprehensive careers programme, including expert talks, guidance sessions, and work experience placements across a wide range of industries — helping pupils explore pathways and prepare for life beyond school.
International Travel to Broaden Horizons
At Read School, we believe that travel is one of the most powerful ways to inspire curiosity, independence and a global perspective. Our international trips offer pupils unforgettable experiences that enrich their learning and personal growth far beyond the classroom.
In the 2025/2026 academic year, pupils had the chance to explore incredible destinations including Iceland and Barcelona with a Marbella sports tour and Paris trip already on the horizon. These trips are carefully designed to complement academic subjects, build cultural awareness and create lifelong memories.
