Why Join?

As a member of the Read School family we are reaching out to you to ask that you will join us in an exciting new era for the Draxonians’ Association.

The DA has been working hard and planning more events for this coming year. We have a significantly larger committee representing the DA as a whole, and I would like to welcome on board our newest committee member Georgina Ashton (Hill). Georgina taught Business Studies at Read School and quickly progressed in her career to Deputy Headteacher before starting her family. Georgina now volunteers for various Parish Councils, charities and has recently become a local councillor for Selby & District. She will be a huge asset to our committee. We also welcomed Ellie McClaren and Josie Smith onto the committee recently. Ellie is a Draxonian, her time at Read School spanned 15 years, and Josie was the Medical Centre Supervisor and School Matron from 2007 – 2021. We now have a large and diverse voluntary committee, committed to representing all demographics of the Draxonians’ and providing something for everyone.

The DA does require some funds to conduct its business. The business of the DA is of course to create a fantastic alumni community by providing regular events that bring Draxonians together, and also to support the school. The day to day running of the DA includes regular newsletters (both digital and hardcopy), the organisation of several events both in and out of school which does often include the invitation of special guests/speakers and the general day to day administration of the Association. The future and the growth of the DA is uppermost in our planning, and we have been making exceptional progress, especially considering the last 2 years we have all endured. The Draxonian database has grown three-fold, we saw some 60 attendees at our Winter Reunion in December 2021 and the Peter Watt Memorial Cricket Match in the summer had a huge turnout and carried on late into the beautiful summer’s evening! It’s great to see so many of you taking part and engaging with us.

The Draxonians’ is certainly gaining momentum, which is evident from the recent events that we have organised. We have many plans in the wings to ensure that there are events throughout the year that appeal to our whole Draxonians’ demographic and at the time of writing this we are already looking forward to co-hosting a Couture Evening and a rugby event at Selby Rugby Club. We are always keen to hear members' thoughts and ideas for the DA, be that event ideas, fundraising opportunities, or other mini reunion suggestions.
